People who search on Google in 2026 won’t always see that list of ten links. For many searches, an AI-generated summary appears first, and in AI Mode, the entire conversation takes place within Google. For website owners, the question is straightforward: is it still worth investing in SEO?
The answer came from Google itself. On May 15, 2026, the company published its first official guide on how to optimize websites for Search’s AI features. The main takeaway: optimizing for AI is still SEO.
What Google Said
The guide explains that AI Mode and Overviews use the same ranking and quality systems as traditional search. The AI searches for pages in Google's index to build the response. If your site isn't well-indexed, it won't appear in the AI's response either.
The document also debunks a recent trend. Acronyms like AEO and GEO, marketed as new techniques, are treated as the same old SEO applied to a new format. There are no additional technical requirements for appearing in AI.
And here's a word of caution: anti-spam policies apply to AI as well. Buying mentions or fabricating citations to "show up on ChatGPT" falls into the same category of manipulation.
What the numbers show
A study by SEOcrawl involving 16,661 websites measured the actual impact. Clicks from Google’s organic search results fell by 15% in one year. Visits from AI assistants rose by 45%. Even so, Google still drives about 80 times more visits than all AI assistants combined.
In other words: Google remains the main gateway. What has changed is that simple questions are answered right there, and those who click through are more decisive.
What to Do on Your Website Now
- Make sure Google can read everything. A fast, indexed website with no duplicate pages and Search Console set up. That’s the foundation of everything.
- Answer real questions. The AI constructs answers by pulling various excerpts from different pages. Pages that provide clear and direct answers are more likely to be cited.
- Show what only you know. Cases you’ve handled, your own statistics, real photos, and insights from those who do the work. Generic text, just like a thousand others, is falling by the wayside.
- Use structured data. It tells Google, without any ambiguity, who you are, what you do, and where you serve customers.
- Track it in Search Console. Since June 2026, the dashboard has shown performance for AI features separately. You can see if your site appears in the answers.
What about algorithm updates?
Google has already rolled out two major updates in 2026: one from March 27 to April 8 and another from May 21 to June 2. Neither of these is a penalty. They reorganize the results to reward the most useful content. Websites with a solid technical foundation and original content weather these changes with fewer issues.
Abstract
AI hasn't killed SEO. It has widened the gap between a well-built website and one that was thrown together in a hurry. If you want to know how yours is doing today, talk to ZipHub and we’ll review it with you.
